Computer Recycling Programs in the SF Bay Area

Okey Dokey. I know who my readership is (friends and family, and that’s about it), and for most of you, I am your de-facto I.T. manager, and your midnight help desk attendant. So, I thought it was about time to talk to you about all that crap you have sitting in your closet collecting dust. No, I’m not talking about the skeletons, that’s for a different blog post. I’m talking about that old computer monitor that your skeleton is currently sitting on, posed like “The Thinker” by Auguste Rodin.
It’s time to get rid of that lump of glass and toxic heavy metals and recycle it! While you’re at it pickup that old PC that we upgraded you from over 2 years ago and take it with you. Where are you taking this stuff? Well it depends. If you want to donate it for free, you will probably have to cross one of the bridges and go to San Francisco or to Marin. If you don’t want to drive too far, then there are several places that will take them off your hands for a small fee:
- Goodwill Industries of San Francisco County, San Mateo County, and Marin County
- Will take donations of laptops, PCs, monitors of just about any age and condition
- They accept printers and scanners if less than 5 years old.
- The recycling program is free of charge and is tax deductible.
- Proceeds and some equipment go into the job training programs.
- Here’s their website with more information: http://www.sfgoodwill.org/sfbacrp/
- Pleasant Hill Recycling
- PCs and other electronics are accepted as scrap metal
- CRT monitors (any TV with a picture tube for that matter) are about $15.00 each to recycle as of my last visit.
- No data destruction services so make sure to wipe your hard drive, or remove it completely before recycling it.
- (925) 689-3200
- 1320 Galaxy Way; Concord, CA 94520
- Contra Costa County Landfill (Pleasant Hill Bayshore Disposal)
- $25.00 per CRT monitor
- $5.00 per PC chassis
- (925) 685-4711
